Holistic Nutrition Counseling

with Makenna Baum MS, RDN

What is holistic nutrition?

The journey to "healthy" often feels overwhelming. It feels like there is too much to do, too far to go and all with too little time. When "healthy" is one more thing on the to do list [when we believe healthy is a destination to get to], it feels like too much to manage. However, when we approach health as small steps infused into every part of our life, it begins to feel enriching rather than overwhelming.

For example, slowing down at mealtime not only supports your digestion, it starts to become a habit of slowing down when your full presence is needed. Learning to manage your cravings stops being just about food and starts teaching you to manage your mind. Eating becomes an act of self -love rather than just a moment to fuel the engine.

By approaching health holistically, we can learn to stop hyper-fixating on the problems that need fixing, and instead put our energy into supporting our body, mind, and spirit all at once.

Wellness is a dynamic journey that is always fluxing with the seasons of your life. It often requires sacrifice, but remain dedicated to the journey and you will find it gives back abundantly-- not only to yourself but to your closest relationships, community, and in many ways to the greater collective. Honor the journey and you'll see your world changed for the better.

Natural Herbs

I am a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), with a Masters in Nutrition, and a current student of Kerala Ayurvedic AcademyI take an evidence-based approach to nutrition that is backed by modern science and ancient time-tested knowledge.

As a Tucson resident, I've had the privilege to work for many years as a dietitian at Miraval Arizona, a world-renowned resort and spa that emphasizes mindfulness. Over the years, I've developed experiential workshops, lectures, cooking demos, and meditative experiences, and worked one-on-one to customize nutrition plans for hundreds of people. I've studied and taught a wide range of topics including gut health, anti-inflammatory eating, managing cravings, optimal food combinations, and eating for immunity, emotional well-being, and a healthy metabolism. I love teaching and making complex topics simple, but I am most deeply fulfilled by supporting people in connecting more deeply with themselves.  Diet is often the first stepping stone on a path to living a happier, healthier, more aligned life!

Seeing these deeper transformations take place led me to seek more ways to merge food and spirit. I don't want to just tell you how to eat. I want to give you tools that can support your whole being. This has led me to study the ancient holistic science of Ayurveda. This 5000-year-old system of health (and sister science to yoga!), is profound in its ability to facilitate true healing and yet it is simple, practical, and accessible. It is holistic in that every action considers the mind, emotions, and well-being of the person in addition to the physicality. The foundation of Ayurvedic dietetics is to use food as medicine. Everything we need is provided by nature and often found in the kitchen. How amazing is that?

Through my own spiritual journey, I've found many practices that continue to support me including meditation, yoga, dance, and spending time with nature. I feel the most myself playing in nature, listening to the sounds of life, speaking to the plants, and creating Earth altars out of leaves, flowers, rocks, and twigs. Listening to my intuition and taking life as an opportunity to learn, celebrate, and love keeps me stay grounded and excited for the next moment!
